Because I am a Girl I ask … that you understand that all I want to do is draw shoes for a living.
Because I am a Girl I believe … that the world would be a much nicer if everyone lived by the phrase ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’. It’s something I am trying my hardest to abide by, and it can be difficult – you really just have to bite your tongue sometimes!
Because I am a Girl I hope … that the future generation are going to be okay. At age 25, I am thankful I’m not a teenager growing up in 2014. No one can begin to understand how hard it must be, except for teenagers themselves. It’s all gone a bit crazy – I can’t believe some of the videos that have gone viral in the last few years featuring recognisable young men and women. I made mistakes as a teenager but they weren’t put out there for the whole world to see and so easily viewed and shared by millions of people.
Because I am a Girl I wonder … if there will ever be a day I can look in the mirror and not instantly see my flaws.
Because I am a Girl I dream … of opening up American Vogue Magazine and seeing my illustrations on the pages inside. I live for that day!
Because I am a Girl I remember … receiving my first handbag. My dad brought it back for me from a long trip he took to deliver medicine to sick people in Vietnam. I still have the bag, 22 years later.
Because I am a Girl I like… watching silly TV shows Like Keeping Up With The Kardashians. A lot of young girls want to be like Kim- but there’s only one Kim – opportunities like the ones she is given do not happen everyday to everyone! Personally, I think its a far more realistic goal to aim to work as her hairdresser, make-up artist or clothing designer, traveling the world and getting paid really well to do a job you love. Seeing your work on TV and in magazines is amazing, especially when you work so hard to achieve it.
Because I am a Girl I dislike … living in world where the female population are conditioned from a young age to believe that there is nothing about their physical appearance that can’t be improved with a potion, new make-up brush, or cosmetic operation. Men really have no idea what its like.
Because I am a Girl I feel … proud of how many Irish females have achieved massive success all over the world, be it fashion (Simone Rocha), music (Imelda May), or sport (Katie Taylor). I for one have received amazing support from so many Irish businesses, and I try my best to support and promote upcoming homegrown talent myself.
Because I am a Girl I celebrate… the fact that my best friend, stylist Grace Moore, and I have just signed a deal to write a book, an illustrated ‘guide to life’, for teenage girls. We can’t wait to get started on it!
