July 12th 2013 is Malala YousafzaiâÂÂs 16th birthday and she is marking the day by giving her first high-level public appearance and statement around the importance of education. This day, Malala Day, can be a new beginning for education and the leading role that youth around the world can play in enabling all children to get an education.
On October 9th 2012 Malala was shot by a member of the Taliban while she was travelling to school. She was targeted because of her committed campaigning for the right of all girls to get an education. She was flown to the UK to recover from the shooting and is now back at school and continues to campaign for every childâÂÂs right to education.
To date, over 600,000 people have shown their support for girlsâ education by raising their hand online or in a photograph as part of PlanâÂÂs global BIAAG campaign â Malala has also raised her hand to support Plan’s campaign for girlsâ education.
