11 million people are in desperate need of humanitarian aid. The humanitarian situation in the Lake Chad Basin countries, which include Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, is deteriorating with the region facing five major crises: food insecurity, malnutrition, epidemics, floods and population movements. These crises are in part due to the displacement of people triggered by the horrendous, violent and inhuman campaign of militant group Boko Haram
7.1 million people are severely food insecure and the situation of children is particularly worrying. Some 515,000 children are severely and acutely malnourished and their lives are at risk if aid does not reach them urgently.
Plan International is currently working to provide much needed support to these children by providing increased access to quality and inclusive education. We are also providing increased child protection support for vulnerable boys and girls. It is through these education programmes that we increase the capacity of organisations to identify, support, and assist children in dire circumstances.
For every €1 we receive, Plan International Ireland spend 93c on our programmes. The rest is spent on governance and fundraising.
Emma’s is just one story. You can can choose to sponsor a child in any of the 86,466 communities where Plan International work.
The decision to sponsor is yours, as is when you want to stop or pause. We understand circumstances change.
Child sponsorship is an effective and ethical way for you to make an immediate and lasting improvement to the lives of the world’s poorest children.
When you sponsor a child, you can actually see the impact you are having and how you are helping the boy or girl you sponsor and the community around them.
When you sponsor a child, your contribution goes straight to the heart of that child’s community, not just to the child you sponsor. Your sponsorship ensures your sponsored child has the best chance in life, and that the community around benefits in so many ways.
Sponsorship lets you follow your sponsored child’s progress every step of the way. You can be hands-on with the community and child you sponsor. You’ll write letters, exchange experiences, get regular updates and photographs and even have the opportunity to meet if you so choose.
