Nicola, 8, and her family were among hundreds of residents from the village in Eastern Samar, who fled up a small hill to the evacuation centre âÃÂàthe elementary school âÃÂàand waited for Typhoon Haiyan to pass. When they returned, all but one house in the village had been destroyed. A confirmed 22 people died in the village âÃÂà12 of them children.
âÃÂÃÂI did cry then,âÃÂàNicolaâÃÂÃÂs mother Davina admits. A community volunteer with Plan for 11 years, she says she is worried about money, food, proper shelter âÃÂàand the impact on the children. âÃÂÃÂI worry most about their education. My eldest, Mary-Dell, 16, has just started college but I think she will have to stop. We cannot afford to send her and have to prioritise things.âÃÂÃÂ
