Because I am a Girl is a campaign which addresses the urgent need to stand up for the rights of millions of girls. In the poorest regions of the world, girls face double discrimination and unique barriers to survival and development, simply because they are young and female.
However, we are at a turning point in breaking the cycle of poverty. There is unprecedented momentum coming from mothers – women in their twenties and thirties – who hold the key to their daughters’ futures in a way that no other generation of women has before. The reason for this is that most of these women have had some level of formal education, and, as a result, are determined that their daughters too should go to school and so have the chance to of greater gender equality and a more fulfilled life.
