The Media and Communications Officer will contribute to strengthening Plan International’s profile in print, broadcast and online media, as well as supporting wider communications work linked to our key partnerships. Identifying, writing and pitching compelling stories about Plan International and its work, the post-holder will work with the media and other partners to deliver high quality communications outputs to promote the organisation and its key messages to our target audiences.
The candidate will endeavour to build and amplify the Plan International brand and Because I am a Girl campaign with the Irish public.
To take a leadership role on national media and PR campaigns to promote Plan’s work including our “Because I am a Girl” campaign; fundraising work; policy and advocacy work; and disaster & emergency response. To take a lead role in developing media plans for our International Day of the Girl campaign.
Build relationships with valuable journalists at target media outlets, building a knowledge of national and regional print, broadcast and online media. To escort media on field visits where necessary. Respond to media enquiries and opportunities as they arise, to provide a timely and accurate service to media contacts.
Lead ‘sell-in’ of stories to media to secure high quality media coverage. Pitching stories to national and regional media, writing press releases, features, articles, op-eds and blogs, often to tight deadlines. Brief staff for media interviews.
Support the CEO to develop Opinion Pieces / letters to the Editor for Irish and International media.
Negotiate, set-up and provide briefings for media interviews with Plan spokespeople. Manage photo-calls and support with the development of media and PR plans for major campaigns. Deal with PR enquiries to maximise opportunities and minimise reputational risks.
Monitor and report on communications performance metrics.
Support with the production of key messaging documents and Q&As Provide ‘on-call’ support including during evenings and weekends.
Support the Commercial Development Officer to devise and deliver integrated communications strategies around key partnerships. Support the identification of potential reputational risks.
Contribute creatively to planning and delivering communications campaigns and strategies to increase Plan’s public awareness.
Attend partnership meetings to represent communications as and when required, offering an efficient and friendly service to partners.
Work across the organisation, around the Plan federation and with partners to identify strong communications stories drawn from Plan’s work and campaigns.
Write high quality, compelling copy in a range of styles including for press releases, reactive statements, op-eds, blogs and letters to editor, and social media and web material as required.
Develop media packages to offer to print, broadcast and online media including copy, case studies, images, video, interviews, etc.
Adapt material for different media outlets; and ensure content can work across traditional and digital platforms. To support and train Plan staff to secure content from field visits.
Source content and provide editorial and design support for internal and external marketing material.
Work closely and collaboratively with Plan’s Digital officer to ensure maximum reach of media and news content across all platforms.
Monitor breaking news stories and use Plan’s social media platforms to respond accordingly. Manage uploading of news content (press releases, statements, etc) on Plan’s website.
Where appropriate, engage with journalists on social media platforms in order to build new relationships for Plan.
Work with the Communications teams throughout the Plan International network and/or with and/or with external suppliers.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation and federation in order to be equipped with the compelling and accurate information to complete the tasks above.
To engage collaboratively with funders and other INGOs to achieve public engagement objectives.
With the Head of Public Engagement, to lead the production of the annual report.
Work with colleagues to promote events such as fundraising events or conferences. Produce marketing material for events and provide live social media at events as needed.
Support engagement with Plan Ambassadors and the Youth Advisory Panel.
Ensure effective internal communications is delivered through suitable opportunities.
To maintain a register and report on lobbying undertaken to further Plan’s mission.
Manage interns and volunteers as required.
Educated to degree level or equivalent.
Excellent writing and editing skill and attention to detail around this.
Intuition for PR and news stories.
High levels of initiative and the ability to work without direct supervision.
Good knowledge of Irish media.
Ability to communicate complex or technical topics in simple terms to multiple audiences.
Experience of digital media – social media and website content.
Very good attention to detail and motivated to produce high quality content and presentations.
Ability and willingness to work outside normal office hours as required.
Excellent communication skills.

A good understanding of the charity/not-for-profit sector.
Strong communications and networking skills: the role requires co-ordination with a diverse number of stakeholders, both internal and external. S/he will need to have strong written and verbal communication skills, and be able to adapt messages to meet diverse audiences.
Excellent time management and organisational skills: the role requires an ability to plan well and deliver on objectives in a timely way.
Proven learning, creativity and innovation ability: the role requires someone who is willing to seek out, develop and successfully implement new ideas, or adopt proven approaches that support the delivery of quality programmes.
Ability to influence, advocate and profile our work: S/he must be willing to engage with others inside and outside the organisation to promote our child rights agenda, and profile the work of Plan International Ireland.
