Zena joined Plan Ireland in September 2014 after graduating with a first class honours in her Emergency Management masters from Dublin City University. Zena developed an interest in natural hazards and disasters from a very young age, which subsequently influenced many of her academic and career decisions. After studying a degree in Environmental Hazards followed by masters in Geohazards from University College London she began working as a catastrophe risk analyst for a leading London insurance company. She decided to take the plunge to return to university to pursue a career in the field she was most passionate about and refine her interest further. With a keen interest in both development and disaster risk reduction she jumped at the opportunity to begin an internship with Plan Ireland.
Zena is most passionate about topics relating to resilience, the psychological aspect of disaster and gender issues. However, she finds interest in just about anything. Zena enjoys research, sharing information and engaging with others. In her spare time she loves endurance sports, open water swimming and one day hopes to return to Ironman triathlon. Aside from sport she loves reading biographies on inspirational women, going to coffee shops and going for long walks during autumn or spring.
